Costa Rica – La Fortuna

La Fortuna is a town in the north west of Costa Rica. set at the base of the Arenal Volcano which is still active. Another dormant volcano called Chato is also nearby.

We spent 3 days there and luckily caught sight of the volcano on the first day, thereafter it was covered in clouds.

Many of the hotels have thermally heated springs, as ours did.

Out hotel also had a good selection of iguanas.

We decided on two activities whilst in the area, the first was zip lining and we chose the extreme package of 7 rides.

After being fitted out with a harness and viewing a safety briefing, we headed into these trailers dragged by tractors up to the first launch tower.

The rides were pretty awesome and flying 120 meters above waterfalls at up to 70kph was quite an experience! I even managed to relax and enjoy the last couple of rides!

Our next activity was the hanging bridges, a set of 16 bridges across a 3 km trail.

Being above the canopy provides some lovely views of the rainforest. It also allows you to spot some of the wildlife higher up in the trees. Our guide managed to spot plenty of wildlife including snakes, birds, monkeys as well as some beautiful trees and plants.

Above is a yellow eyelash pit viper, the first snake we have seen on our tours so far.

Nicknamed a Broccoli tree

A Toucan sits chirping on the tree tops.

Another pit viper wrapped around a tree branch.

These banana type things are the fruit pods for this tree.

Finally some bananas!

We enjoyed our time in La Fortuna, there is certainly lots to do here.

Next we drive down the Nicoya Peninsula for a few days by the beach in Santa Teresa.
