Canada – Quebec

The drive from Halifax to Quebec City is just over 1,000km or about a ten hour journey. So we stopped over for the night enroute to make the journey more enjoyable.

Eventually the road runs alongside the St. Lawrence River with lots of lovely towns and riverside views along the way.

The landscape is most flat farm lands but non the less picturesque for it.

We stopped for lunch at a small riverside town called Kamouraska.

The churches here seem to all have metal steeples that shine in the sunlight.

We are now in French Canada, the signage has changed to French and its the dominant language in these parts.

It seems strange to just drive a few miles and so much has changed. I’m looking forward to french food tonight!

Quebec City is Canada’s 12th largest city and has a population of less than 1 million people.

The impressive Chateau Frontenac, a Fairmont hotel, towers above the old town.

The old town area is very pretty with cobblestone streets and rows of restaurants and boutiques.

There was some kind of art initiative going on with pink figures everywhere!

It’s lovely to walk through the old town but we chose to take a day out in the countryside. We headed to Jacques Cartier National Park.

We did a 3 hour trek through the park which was great. Along the way I thought I saw a small black dog ahead of us.

We followed it at a distance as it climbed up a tree. At first I thought it was a small bear and maybe an adult bear nearby but thankfully it was a young black porcupine!

The views on the trek were great with some of the fall colours starting to show in the trees.

Quebec City is a nice city to visit, but we have more to see and next we head to Ottawa.
