Canada – Montreal

Montreal is Canada’s second most populous city and the Capital of the Quebec region.

It is set on an island but doesn’t seem it as it’s a big city. It’s french influence is still prominent.

We started our stay there with a night time walk around the Old Montreal area, near to where we were staying.

It’s a vibrant area and looks great at night with many of its buildings lit up.

The next day we took a walk around the city to see more of what this city has to offer.

There is some nice street graffiti around the city, the one below is apparently one of the oldest.

We took a walk up to Mont Royal, a nice park area with great views across the city.

Passing the high view point, there is a nice lake in the park that is worth checking out.

Some autumnal colours starting to show in the trees.

After a long walk, we headed to the Atwater market for some lunch.

It’s a great spot to eat and just walk around the many stalls.

Procrastination rules as I try not to miss out on some the great food choices!

Walking back to our hotel near the old town there is lots to see.

We love exploring cities on foot, you often stumble across things you wouldn’t otherwise see.

Below we saw this beautiful vintage Rolls Royce waiting for its wedding party.

We took a walk across to St Helen’s Island to see the Biosphere which we could see from the waterfront.

The views from Jacques Cartier bridge and from the island back across to the bridge are great.

Walking back through the old town of Montreal provides lots of nice views too.

There is a famous cocktail bar called The Coldroom that is worth a visit, although it is intentionally difficult to find and has a door that requires a bell ring and a wait to be let in, should they choose to open the door!

Once inside, relax and taste their wonderful cocktails.

We took the metro to see the Botanical gardens which was lovely, but perhaps not the best time of year to visit if you want to see it at its finest, impressive nevertheless.

They have a kitchen garden and use much of the produce in their restaurant and also donate some to local charities.

Next we went into the Notre Dame Basilica, an early 19th century neo-gothic grand church in the old town.

It is a quite beautiful building, rich with ornate features and colours.

We have seen many churches on our travels and this one is a beaut!

Our final stop was to the Museum of Fine Art.

There are some interesting statues around the building and a good eclectic collection inside.

So that was our last stop, next we head to the airport as we return back to the UK.

The sun sets for our last night in Canada as we wait to check in at the airport.

We had a fantastic trip across Canada, from the Rocky mountains in the west to the flat landscapes of the east.

It is truly a vast country with so much to offer, so diverse and inviting, we loved it!
