Lesotho

Lesotho is a sovereign country sat within South Africa. It is also the only country in the world entirely 1,000 metres above sea level. It’s lowest point is 1,400 mtrs.

We stayed in Maseru for a couple of nights before heading into the mountains to stay in Semonkong.

In Maseru we visited a model traditional village named Thaba Bosiu.

The tour was quite interesting and of course it finished with some singing and dancing! Yet again we were the only visitors!

We were treated to the miners song, the dancers wearing their mining overalls and white boots.

The rock below is Mount Qiloana, deemed to have been the inspiration for the ubiquitous traditional Lesotho hat, the Mokorotlo.

The building below is modelled on this.

Close by is Lion Rock, looking quite regal from below.

At night we were treated to an electric storm, the sky was alight with streaks of lightning.

The next day we drove into the mountains towards Semonkong.

The views along the drive are outstanding and the roads are all pretty good too.

The only interruptions on the journey being the shepherds moving their goats or sheep or cattle along the roads.

We stopped off to take a look at Maletsunyane Falls, with it’s near 200 metre drop and the water cascading into the gorge below.

Horses are the primary means of transportation here.

Our accommodation below at the Semonkong Lodge.

We took a walk into the local town and it felt like we were walking through a live western town, hats and horses everywhere.

Lesotho is quite a unique place to visit and the mountain area near Semonkong are beautiful, it is like walking back in time.

Tomorrow we leave Lesotho and reenter South Africa as we set off to explore the eastern and western capes.
