South Africa – Hermanus

Hermanus is a pretty coastal town less than two hours drive from Cape Town.

It’s a vibrant town with an arty feel and we really loved it.

The town is a hotspot for whale watching with many whales visible during the migration season, they even have a Whale Wailer who walks the coastline alerting others on sightings.

There is a lovely coastal walk that starts from the town centre.

Nearer to town there are a number of sculptures to be spotted.

There are lots of great art shops and galleries in the town.

A short rain fall led to this lovely rainbow.

We booked onto a boat trip to see whales, sharks, seals, dolphins and penguins (the Marine Big 5!).

We passed the shark cage boats at the dockside, thankfully that’s not on out itinerary today!

I suited up for the occasion…

To find sharks they took us to the boats with shark cages, well actually, human cages.

The cage is not fully submerged for safety reasons. Bait is thrown into the water and large chunks of seafood are dragged on ropes in front of the cage to draw in the sharks.

We also spotted some Bryde whales which are resident here throughout the year.

We then headed to two small islands where a large Cape fur seal colony live along with some African penguins.

Hermanus is well worth a visit, a great town in a beautiful location.

Next we head to Hout Bay and Camps Bay to check out Cape Town.
