We arrived in Botswana and decided to do two more safari’s, the first in the magical Okavango Delta.

The landscape in the delta is very different to the other safari locations we have experienced in Africa.

It was a 2.5 hour drive from Maun city to get to our camp. As we drove deeper into the delta we only passed a handful of small settlements.

It’s a sandy road along the route with puddles, sketchy bridges and full on off road driving through bonnet high waterways. We have seen these Land Cruisers tackle some horrific roadways but never seem them cope with these conditions.

Our camp was fabulous, set on a small island connected by a log bridge. Surrounded by swamp like reed areas where hippopotamus reside.
That’s our room in the distance below.

We went on a number of game drives and got to see so much wildlife in such a beautiful setting.

Giraffes have a long way to go just to drink some water, much of which is lost as they lift their heads.

Impala are everywhere.

But I fell for the Kudu, such elegant creatures with saucer like ears.

Oxpecker birds remove parasites that reside on their coats.

There are plenty of Wildebeest here.

Plenty of Zebras too.

This was our first encounter with Hyenas, much bigger than Jackals and with a far more menacing look about them.

We also spotted a mongoose, our guide was alerted by some birds squawking around him, trying to drive him away.

The delta is rich with water and vegetation, making it a haven for so many species of birds.

Below is a Black Heron, it feeds on fish by creating an umbrella with its wings and wiggling it’s yellow feet to draw in its prey.

We managed to find a Leopard, hiding in the shade of a bush.

Suddenly we saw it had a young cub with it!

There are plenty of elephants here too.

Our guide was fantastic, from a distance she spotted a herd of Impala that had all started to look in the same direction as a flock of birds took to the air.
We spotted a lioness around 300 yards away and she was moving closer to us.

We watched her approach and then settle down in a shady area where she started to groom herself.

We stopped and watched her, she let out a few low growls. Our guide thought she might be calling her cubs. However, shortly after, another lioness joined her.
Seeing lions meet each other is a wonderful thing to witness.

Sunset approached as we stopped for a drink or two..

On our last day we were taken on canoes called Mokoro.

It is a Botswana Venetian like experience as you follow the Hippo trails through the delta’s landscape.

The Okavango Delta is just a beautiful place to visit and it takes an African Safari to another level.
I thought we had completed our safari experiences in Africa but this was something we will never forget.
Next we fly up to Kasane for our final safari in Chobe national park.
