We spent nearly six weeks travelling across South Africa including some time in Eswatini and Lesotho.
We clocked up 4,500km driving across the country starting from Johannesburg heading east then circling back south and ending up in Cape Town.
Our first proper stop was in Eswatini and then we headed to Drakensberg, a picture postcard mountaintop area.

We left Drakensberg and drove into Lesotho before heading down to the coast to stay in St Francis Bay.

Moving on we started our Garden Route trip spending nearly three weeks seeing as much as we could.
Our first stop in the Western Cape was the lovely Plettenberg Bay.

Driving further west we spent a couple of nights in a town called Wilderness, a recommendation from some people we had met in Zanzibar.

We cut inland to visit Calitzdorp, which we soon found out was close to a town known as the Ostrich capital of the world!

We headed back south to the coast and stayed in the lovely town of Hermanus.

We were now close to Cape Town but chose to stay in a couple of beach towns rather than be in the city itself, the first was Hout Bay.

Just a short drive north and a little closer to Cape Town was Camps Bay, our last stop in the country.

South Africa was a great experience, there are so many positives about the country and we loved our time there.
Of course, even as a visitor, you can’t escape the challenges that exist in this country with it’s complex and often challenging history and likely difficult times ahead. The economic and social divides between the racial groups are clear for all to see.
Next we head to Namibia as we start to head north again before we leave via Kenya.
