Canada – Whistler

We drove north from Vancouver to stay in Whistler for a couple of days, starting our trip into the Rocky Mountains.

The route along the ‘Sea to Sky’ highway is fabulous. The 2 hours drive took us half a day just due to stopping along the route to see things and take photos.

Our first stop was at Porteau Cove to check out the spectacular views, even on an overcast day.

Followed by a short stop to see Shannon Falls.

We decided to take the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish. It’s not a cheap ride but there are some short walks at the top and the views are good.

They have a great, if wobbly, sky bridge to walk along, often covered by low cloud.

Our final stop before arriving at Whistler was Brandywine falls.

A small trek to see the waterfalls and the views across the valley below was lovely.

Finally we made it to Whistler, a top class ski village and a fabulous location for trekking and cycling in the summer season.

The glacier waters make the river water a light blue colour.

We decided to do a hike on the mountain, which meant taking the Blackcomb gondola then the Peak 2 Peak gondola and finally the Peak Express chair to get to the starting point.

The views from the top were fabulous.

Below is the sky bridge at the top of the Peak Express chairlift.

It’s a wobbly walk across the bridge, don’t look down if you struggle with heights, I did my best not to!

My wife, below, posing for a picture prior to starting the hike.

In the distance you can see the Black Tusk pinnacle below.

With the snow capped Rocky Mountains running on into the horizon.

As we continued on our trek we started to get glimpses of the stunning turquoise waters of Cheakamus Lake below us.

The mountain was spectacular, we luckily had great weather which only enhanced the experience along with the views.

We only had two days in Whistler, you could easily spend longer. The range of treks is impressive and the scenery to die for!

Our trek was the High Notes route, around 4 hours long and moderate/intermediate in level. If was fun, tricky and tough in places but well worth the effort!

Next we drive to Banff, about 8-10hrs away across the mountains with an over night stop enroute.

  1. Such brilliant photos Jeff and looks like another epic trip. John has always wanted to go to Canada but we’re not great at planning trips and I don’t like flying. When you’ve finished your journeys in Canada, you’ll have to let us know where you think is best to visit, if only one place is possible and maybe we’ll grasp the nettle! Great to see photo of Jacqui too, it’s nice to see you both in the photos, otherwise they can be like a beautiful travel brochure, seeing you in the photos brings the more personal touch. Top job!
